What every lesson includes

Songs you choose

Custom sheet music

When a song you're interested in learning is too advanced for your level, I often arrange more level appropriate arrangements that are accessible and still sound great.

Weekly practice videos

I always offer to make video recordings for any songs, warm-ups or technique that you'd like a breakdown of to watch at home.

Access to the Lab

Every student can use the music technology lab before or after their lessons to explore keyboards, synths, production tools and music learning games. For an extra fee, I can create an entire curriculum to go along with what you're learning in your method books as well, inquire for more information.

Four themed concerts

Getting four opportunities a year to perform different kinds of music in varied settings helps build confidence, strong musicality and gives you consistent goals to always be working towards.

Access to performance classes, ensembles, workshops and camps

I offer extra learning and performance opportunities every semester, all are accessible to students for an extra fee, or in the case of performance classes, they're free to all students.

Testimonials

What families are saying.

"

Dear Jon, Thank you for yet another fantastic concert! We know these events take a great deal of planning- it shows! Yet somehow, you always make the kids feel like the star of the show. You make each child feel valued, which gives them the confidence to let their talents shine. It is always such a joy to see your students faces beaming with satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment from performing the pieces they've worked so hard to learn... all your students- not just our own girls :). Thank you for sharing your gifts with these kids!

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Where are you located and who do you teach?+
Piano Player's Workshop is located in the Southdowns neighborhood of Baton Rouge, LA, right across from Liberty High School. As I teach from my home, I wait to give out the actual address until we've spoken and set up our first lesson. I teach kids, teens, and adults of all levels (both adult beginners and adults with prior playing experience), both in person and online.
What styles of music do students learn?+
I try to get students playing in as many different genres as I can! I think learning about the history, theory and techniques involved in varying styles builds well rounded musicians, and a deeper love, appreciation and understanding of music. While method books tend to expose students to multiple genres, what students work on outside of the method books often center around where my strength is, which is popular music — movie themes, contemporary classical (neoclassical), pop, rock, video game music, blues and jazz. Classical music is played quite a bit as well, although I'd say more modern genres make up the bulk of what is learned. Either way, every student works on music that interests them, no matter what that genre is. I work closely with students to make certain they're playing in genres that excite them, while also being exposed to other genres they have less experience in to ensure a well-rounded musical education.
How much do piano lessons cost?+
Tuition is billed monthly and ranges from $156.75 to $296.50 per month, depending on lesson length (30, 40, 45, or 60 minutes) and lesson type (school-aged student or adult lessons).   5-10% discount options are also available for upfront payments, see the Lessons page for full pricing options.
Do you offer a free trial lesson?+
Yes! New students can schedule a free trial lesson with me through the Contact page. In that trial lesson you'll learn a few songs, see how I teach, get to try out the music technology lab, ask me any questions you'd like, and see if it's all a good fit before deciding if you'd like to enroll or not.
How often do students perform?+
Students have four themed performance opportunities each year — in 2026 we'll be doing a Movie Music Concert, a Winter Holiday Concert, a Play with a Band Concert, and a Spring Concert at Manship Theatre.
Do you offer online piano lessons?+
Yes! During the pandemic I developed my own unique multi-camera online teaching setup that lets you see myself, my hands, and light up keys/pedals, along with direct audio from my keyboard, for a clear, interactive experience. Online piano lessons are available for both students inside of Baton Rouge who don't have the time or ability to do in-person lessons, or for students anywhere else in the world who'd like to learn. All you need is an instrument at home and access to a computer or device with Zoom. I also do online lessons with my in-person lesson students from time to time if they are sick or unable to make it to a lesson in-person.
